MESSAGE FOR ADVANCED UPPER BELTS & INSTRUCTORS
Hey Team. As many of you already know, in the back end of things here at the gym we have been working on an idea to promote better communication between Staff, Instructors, and Students. This is the launch of that idea.
Many of you already have access to the Instructors Group through the Band app, we are now using the same idea for the whole gym and we need your guys’ help in heading this out. We have divided the schedule into groups, or “Squads”, by class times. Both Students and Instructors will join the Squads for the class times they usually attend/teach, lead and are generally organized by you guys. John and the other full-time staff will be managing and participating as well but we need you guys to be participating and being “hands-on” with the Squads.
What we are wanting this launch to do is promote better communication throughout the gym as well as give the opportunity for leadership and mentoring of newer students by the more experienced upper belts and Instructors. Both things we have seen benefit students before, and we are excited to see what this will do on a larger scale.
With the Band app, and in your Squads there are many things you can do, from the group and individual communication, group posts, challenges, and polls. We encourage you all to do some looking into the features of the app. Attached with this message are links to the list of current squads for you to join, as well as YouTube videos for more information on the app.
Let us know if you guys have any questions about the launch and where we can help.

Injury Protocol & Policy for Krav Maga Students
At Rocky Mountain Self Defense & Fitness, your safety and long-term progress are our top priorities. While Krav Maga training is designed to be realistic and effective, it also involves physical intensity, which can occasionally lead to injuries. How you handle these situations is key to your recovery and continued growth as a martial artist.
1. Report the Injury Immediately
Notify your instructor right away if you are injured during class—even if the injury seems minor.
If you are unsure whether it is serious, err on the side of caution and speak to a coach.
In case of a more serious injury, we will follow our emergency response protocol and, if necessary, contact medical personnel.
2. Follow Proper Medical Advice
Seek medical attention if advised or if pain persists after class.
Provide a doctor’s note or clearance before resuming physical activity if required.
3. Stay in the Routine – Watch and Learn
We highly recommend staying in the habit of attending class, even if you cannot physically participate.
Observation is a powerful learning tool. You’ll absorb techniques, corrections, and strategies by watching others.
Stay mentally engaged by taking notes, asking questions, and visualizing yourself performing the techniques.
Maintain your training mindset and routine. Missing weeks of class can stall your progress more than the injury itself.
4. Modified Participation (If Appropriate)
If your injury allows for partial movement (e.g., upper body only), let your instructor know so we can offer safe modifications.
Never “push through” pain or attempt to “tough it out” without approval—this can make things worse.
5. Communicate with Us
Keep your instructor updated on your healing progress.
We’re here to support you and can help tailor your return to training with appropriate intensity and care.
Remember: Injuries are a part of any serious training journey, but how you respond is what sets you apart. Recovery doesn’t have to mean regression.
Stay sharp. Stay engaged. Keep showing up.
— The RMSDF Team
At Rocky Mountain Self Defense & Fitness, we’re committed to helping you build long-term strength, health, and resilience. We understand that injuries can happen—whether in class, during other activities, or from everyday life. How you handle an injury makes all the difference in maintaining progress and preventing setbacks.
1. Communicate With Your Coach
If you’re injured or dealing with pain, let your coach know before class starts.
Whether it’s a sore knee, shoulder strain, or something more serious, we can help you work with your body—not against it.
2. Modify – Don’t Skip
Our #1 recommendation: Modify the workout, don’t skip the workout.
Staying consistent keeps you in the habit, maintains your fitness, and supports healing.
We’re experts at giving safe, effective modifications that keep you moving without aggravating your injury.
3. Listen to Your Body (and Your Coach)
Pain is feedback. If something doesn’t feel right, stop and ask for an alternative.
Don’t try to “tough it out”—it’s not worth the risk of making things worse.
4. Stay Accountable & Consistent
Missing weeks of workouts can derail your momentum. Showing up—even with a modified plan—keeps you on track.
We’ll help you adjust goals and track your progress during recovery.
5. Return to Full Intensity Gradually
When cleared or feeling ready, we’ll guide you in ramping back up safely.
Don’t rush. Long-term fitness is a marathon, not a sprint.
Remember: Being injured doesn’t mean being inactive. It means being smart, staying consistent, and trusting your team.
You’re not alone—we’ve got your back.

💥 What “Suck Less” Really Means
When people first hear me say Suck Less. Train More. they sometimes think it’s negative. They don’t get it.
It’s not about tearing yourself down. It’s not about beating yourself up. It’s about facing reality, owning the grind, and doing the things that make you a better human being — even when it’s uncomfortable.
It’s Not About Being Perfect
Everybody sucks at something. Maybe it’s eating better, sticking to your workout plan, or showing up consistently to class. I suck at things too. The difference is: I don’t stay stuck there.
That’s the whole point of Suck Less. You don’t have to go from zero to hero overnight. You just have to get a little bit better every day.
Off track with your workouts? Get back on track.
Ate garbage food? Fine, don’t quit — eat better next meal.
Too tired or busy to train? Tell that little voice in your head to shut up and show up anyway.
The world will always throw obstacles at you — work, stress, family, fatigue. Life is busy. But here’s the truth: it’s always going to be busy. If you don’t make your health and training a priority, you’ll wake up one day weaker, unhappier, and unable to protect yourself or your family.
Where Suck Less Came From
The motto goes back years. I had a coach being way too hard on a student — someone older, less athletic, who was grinding and making progress. She held that student to her own personal standard, and I stopped her right there.
I said: “If we’re doing that, then give me your black belt back, because when I got mine, I knew more and trained harder than you did. Should I hold you to my standard?”
She didn’t like that answer — but it made the point. Everyone’s journey is individual. Everyone’s ceiling is different. What matters is progress. If we can help somebody be safer, more capable, and a little more confident than yesterday, that’s winning.
That’s what Suck Less is all about.
Stop Making Excuses
I hear it all the time:
“Work is too busy.”
“I’m too tired.”
“I’ll start next week.”
News flash: life isn’t slowing down. Work will always be busy. Stress will always be there. Something will always come up.
You can choose to keep making excuses, or you can choose to train anyway. Even if it’s just five minutes a day. Block it off on your calendar. Protect that time like your life depends on it — because it does.
Training isn’t just about muscles or belts. It’s about being capable. It’s about living longer, being healthier, keeping depression at bay, and showing up better for your family.

Early on, it’s normal to want answers before action. That’s human. But self-defense doesn’t work that way.
In the beginning, we prioritize repetition over explanation. Understanding helps, but it’s a small part of skill development. Real progress comes from continued practice — especially when things feel awkward, rushed, or unclear.
You’ll hear coaches answer one question and then say, “Now let’s get reps.” That’s intentional. Learning happens through experience, not perfection.

Martial Arts Training Etiquette
https://youtu.be/jIMND_Usps4
#1 Be consistent
#2 Check your ego
# 3 Let the instructors do their job – you are not the coach be careful of being too”Helpful” We believe in reps. It takes 1000’s of reps to become a black belt. Even if your partner only gets 1 or 2 steps. Its better that they keep repeating those, instead of you coaching them on the next step.
KRAV MAGA 101
Krav Maga is a self-defense system developed by the Israeli army. In Hebrew, Krav Maga literally means “contact combat.” Developed by Hungarian boxer and wrestler Imi Lichtenfeld in the 1930s, the system was first used by Israeli underground paramilitary organizations such as Haganah. When Israel became an official country in 1948, Lichtenfeld was appointed Chief Instructor and Combat Trainer for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Since then, Krav Maga has spread, and it’s now practiced in over 30 countries around the world. At first view, Krav Maga may look like a martial art, but it’s actually a form of combat with no rules and no limitations. Martial arts such as Judo, Karate, and even wrestling are considered sports; Krav Maga, on the other hand, is a regulated form of combat. In fact, the point of Krav Maga is to take the enemy down as quickly as possible. Some instructors of Krav Maga explain it as “the art of going home alive,” which means doing whatever it takes to go home.
PRINCIPLES OF KRAV MAGA:
Neutralize the threat
Avoid injury
Defend and Counter Attack Simultaneously
Use the body’s natural reflexes-
Strike any vulnerable areas
Use any tool or object nearby
Do whatever it takes to go HOME!
KRAV MAGA & FIGHT CLASS RULES & ETIQUETTE
Always show respect to your instructor, training partners, and fellow human beings.
Respect in training means: do not seek to harm fellow students physically or emotionally. Respect also means that you must train seriously and hard enough for you and your partner to improve his or her skill, conditioning, and fighting spirit. Not giving your best during training detracts from both you and your partner’s experience.
What happens on the mat stays on the mat
Tap before it hurts
Do not strike joints, we kick low but nobody needs a blown-out knee
Use control & technique before muscle
Fingernails and toenails must be clipped to avoid scratches
No food is permitted on the mats, drinks are allowed
Absolutely no street shoes on the Krav Maga mats.
All students must wear fight gear approved by RMSDF
Wear a clean uniform and bathe, nobody wants to partner with a smelly person
Show respect to each other. For example, before you spar you should touch gloves, bow, or give each other a nod of respect. Similarly, before you, roll/grapple shake hands or“knuckle touch”.
Accidents and injuries happen and usually come as a result of impatience. Don’t be greedy. Slow down. Ask questions. Ask for help. Upward progression in technique, strength, speed and ability WILL COME. Listen to your Coach.
Do not talk while the instructor is talking. It is disrespectful to those who are trying to learn and to the instructor.
If your partner is being overly enthusiastic or acting in a manner that makes you uncomfortable ask them to stop/slow down. If they don’t notify your instructor. Please remember not everyone wants to train t a million miles an hour
Remember if you look after your partner they will look after you

Creatine + Protein = The Foundation Stack
If you want the simplest “results stack,” this is it: performance + recovery without a cabinet full of junk.
- Creatine → stronger output + repeat effort
- Whey Isolate → recovery + consistency
- Better together → more progress per month
Member note: You don’t need 12 supplements. You need the right 2–3 and consistency.
